Choosing The Best Thigh Exercises for Toning Those Thighs

There are ads everywhere promoting all sorts of fancy thigh toning machines  and inner thigh blasters. But when it comes to the top thigh exercises you don’t need any of these hyped up gadgets to tone up you thighs.

The best exercises for the thighs come in the form of free-weight or bodyweight exercises. You really need not look any further than various forms of exercises like squats, lunges, step-ups, and deadlifts to get those sexy tight thighs that you desire.

There are a whole lot of variations of these basic exercises that you can choose from, so the truth is that you are really just spending your time unecessarily using these fancy thigh machines and inner-thigh gadgets.

One of the best thigh exercises that you can do is lunges, which I am sure many of you have done in the past, and there are probably a dozen or more variations of this exercise, and they all do the job remarkably well.

One of the popular variations of lunges are walking lunges. Instead of standing in place and either lunging forward or lunging backward one step and coming back, with walking lunges you keep moving forward on each step for a certain distance and then turn around and come back. To make things more challenging you can increase the distance each time or start carrying dumbbells to increase the resistance. If walking lunges are done correctly they are a real thigh-burning exercise.

Exercise Routines

Here are a couple of tips when doing walking lunges:

1)  Make sure you step far enough forward so that your front shin stays near enough vertical and your front thigh is about parallel to the ground at the bottom of the step

2) Your trailing leg should have a bend in the knee at the bottom, but your knee should just come short of touching the ground. Do not touch the back knee to the ground during these exercises.

3) Wait for just a moment at the top of each step before lunging forward again.

After you have managed the basic walking lunge down, let me give you a few other variations that change the emphasis just a little for working the inner thighs, outer thighs, and butt slightly differently.

Another variation of the lunge is to step at an angle outward on each step forward, an yet another is to step at a slight angle inward on each step forward. This inward stepping walking lunge is fairly unique and sometimes called a cross-over lunge. It really stretches out the butt and hips.

I am sure that if you give these lunge variations a try you’ll soon be tightening up those thighs in no time at all. Just give all the overated gadgets a miss and use these simple exercise routines and some free-weights and you’re results will be a whole lot better.

Let’s look at a couple of principles….

1) First we’ll discuss how you structure your workouts. For you to stimulate fat-loss from your stomach, you need to stop spending so much of your time doing all the various kinds of abdominal exercises and hundreds of reps or crunches, leg lifts, and torso twists in the hopes of “spot-reducing” your belly and love handles.

If you’ve taken the time to read any reputable fitness publications over the last ten years or so you’ll find that spot-reduction DOES NOT occur. It’s a myth that just won’t seem to go away. The truth is, you don’t lose belly fat by doing exercises that target the stomach area. Unfortunately, even though most people by now do understand this (or at least they should), they still spend WAY too much of their training time trying to target the stomach with too many abs exercises.

Now don’t get me wrong, a certain number of abdominals exercises are one way to maintain your back and strengthen your core. But the fact is that direct abs exercises should only be a minimal part of your workout routines. The majority of your time should be spent focusing on multi-joint exercises that work the largest muscle groups of the body like the legs, chest, and back.

Now that is one of the REAL secrets for getting rid of that stubborn belly fat for good. Focusing on big multi-joint exercises for the largest portions of your body greatly increases your metabolic rate both during the workout, and for the next day or two after the workout. It also stimulates an increase in the fat-burning hormones inside your body. You just don’t get this type of metabolic and hormonal response by spending a large proportion of your time with “abs-pumping” exercises.

Want to lose belly fat fast … Well, get your backside under a barbell and do some squats, do some deadlifts, some lunges, step-ups, some back and chest work. It doesn’t matter if it’s barbells, dumbbells, or even bodyweight exercises…your focus needs to be on big multi-joint exercises done at a high intensity.

That means no five-minute rest periods between sets while you spend the rest of the time chatting with half of the people at the gym. Losing your belly fat fast requires some focus and intensity in your workouts! Anybody who tells you that you can lose your belly fat while sitting on your couch watching TV with some “ab-belt” strapped to you, or doing only a couple of minutes of crunching with your “ab-rocker-roller” is not being totally honest.

2) The next important principle to rid yourself of that flabby belly revolves around your nutrition. The first thing you need to realise is that “diets” only work against your body in your effort to lose the stomach fat. You see, if you follow any of these fad diets like low-carb, or low-fat, or the grapefruit diet, the soup diet, or anything else that restricts 1 or more of the macro-nutrients (protein, carbs, and fat), most of the time you will actually lose lean muscle and lower your metabolic rate. This only makes you put more weight on in the long run, when you start to eat normally again.

I could go into all kinds of details, but essentially you are messing up processes related to your hormonal balance in your body, the muscle glycogen process, insulin, blood sugar, etc., and this stops your fat loss dead in its tracks!

It’s essential that you stop falling for all these fad diet gimmicks, and realise that as humans, we are meant to eat a balanced diet, full of a diverse array of foods from healthy natural sources of carbohydrates, proteins, AND fats. This gives your body all of the macro-nutrients as well as all of the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes that your body needs to run as a well-oiled fat-burning machine!

Most people already know that eating healthy is a number one priority for losing weight fast. Exercise is certainly important but when it comes to lifelong weight management healthy diet is paramount. You can make some simple yet effective ways to make healthy changes in the way you eat every day.

Getting plenty of proteins also helps build lean muscle (if you’re working out hard regularly) so that your metabolism can run at a higher rate from the increased lean muscle on your body.

Eating sufficient protein at most of your meals also aids your body in controlling blood sugar and insulin levels by helping to slow the breakdown of ingested carbohydrates.

3. Although I do not fully agree with extremely low-carb diets, I do believe that one of the main reasons that so many people continue to struggle to lose weight for most of their lives is due to eating excessive processed carbohydrates such as refined grain-based starches and refined sugar.

The natural sugars in whole fruits and berries are ok because the fiber in fruits helps to slow the blood sugar response in your body. Just make sure to avoid fruit juices, which are mostly sugar and have the fiber removed in processing the juice.

In my experience as a nutrition specialist, when people start to minimise their grain consumption (from cereals, bagels, breads, pasta, etc), they start to lose body fat much easier. What I usually recommend is for people to minimise eating grains and focus their carbohydrate intake on fruits and vegetables solely. This simple step alone usually helps people to start managing their weight more easily.

Raw food is the next step in the trend toward vegetarianism and veganism, as well as organic concerns. This diet has been embraced by several celebrities, and there are restaurants catering to raw foodists. There are also many raw food recipe books available, as well as support groups and message boards galore for raw foodists, people who eat a raw food based diet.

Many find the raw food diet compelling due to dramatic weight loss stories, as well as a belief in a healthier lifestyle and body, but this is not just your average diet. It is a lifestyle change. Living foodists: these people follow a diet in which their food is made up of plant food in which the plant’s enzymes are still active, such as sprouted seeds and nuts.

Juicarians: all of their food is in the form of home made juice

Some raw foodists will eat unpasteurized milk and some raw meats, but this can be a concern as cooking is often necessary to kill any unwanted bacteria. Temperatures need to be very high or very low to kill these bacteria, and eating food raw is an infection risk. A small group of raw foodists will not eat food that has been processed by a machine at all, including juicers, dehydrators, blenders, and/or food processors. They believe in eating food in the most natural state possible.

What are living foods?

By some definitions, raw foodist are also life foodists, but a more specific definition implies that in living foods, the enzymes are active, and are therefore considered living. It is the difference between sprouted and unsprouted seeds or nuts (sprouted seeds or nuts are living). Some people will only or mostly eat living foods, believing in the health benefits of greater enzyme activity.
